Important Update Regarding EMI 3 Production

Due to updates in the 2022 ASME A17.1 code, our current EMI 3 cannot be manufactured with its UL listing. According to ASME A17.1-2022, section 2.12.2.4.1, interlocks must either have contacts that comply with section 2.26.4.3.1 or use SIL-rated devices as per section 2.26.4.3.2.

Section 2.26.4.3.1 states:

The devices covered by 2.26.2 must have contacts that are positively opened mechanically; their opening must not rely solely on springs. Hoist way door interlocks do not fall under any of the exemptions.

EMI 3’s design depends on microswitches that open using springs, but mechanically opened switches can’t fit in their current positions. Therefore, EMI 3 will become obsolete without a major redesign. Fox Valley Elevator will stop manufacturing EMI 3 interlocks after April 2026. We understand many customers prefer these interlocks and have used them for years.

We understand the concerns this may raise and are committed to providing solutions to ensure continuity for your projects. As we navigate these changes together, we aim to offer guidance and options that align with the updated standards. Our team is working diligently to develop and identify alternative interlocks that comply with the new regulations, ensuring safety and reliability.

Our objective is to inform our customers as soon as possible with options to consider adopting for future projects. With the time we have remaining, we would like to engage with you and suggest some alternatives.

  • FVE supplies Prudhomme locks with prefabricated studs, adjustable housing, and jigs to assist in installation. This interlock meets the ¾ – 4 requirements of the 2016 code. Tools have been developed to assist dealers and their subcontractors at the point of installation and preparation.
  • FVE also supplies an EMI 4 interlock, which is listed and has a similar operation to the sunsetting EMI 3 interlock.
  • Additionally, FVE has developed a recess-kit for the EMI 4 which modifies the door to allow for installation and operation that meet the 3/4 – 4 code requirements.
  • We are also introducing additional options that will become available over the coming months. We encourage you to call our sales and tech support team to discuss your application.

We recognize and value the impact that change has on any business, including our own. We believe that one of the options will meet your needs and those of your homeowners. We would like to collaborate with you to understand these options and their potential effects on future installations.

Currently, we are in the process of developing a rebuild kit for installed EMI 3 interlocks. Further correspondence will be provided upon release. In the meantime, we will continue supplying the current product until the UL requirements become active and enforceable in 2026.
